Step 3. Careful Reading
This step is designed to get the students to read the text carefully to find out more details the whole text.
Purpose: Further understand the text (Train further reading ability) to find out some difficult sentences and details of the text.
(Now please read the reading again and try to answer the following questions.)
Tasks: (in pairs or in groups)
1.Q:what kind of disease is AIDS?
2.Q: In what ways does AIDS spread?
3.Q: Why is AIDS a deadly disease?
4.Q:Where is the disease spreading faster?
5.Q:Which kind of people suffers the most?
6.Q:What did Xiao Hua decide to do after she knew she got AIDS?
7.Q:Is the desease the only thing that AIDS patients suffer from?
8.Q:What is the best way to show that you care about AIDS patients?
9.Q: What are Xiaohua’s wishes?

Ask Ss to give their understanding of the sentences and talk about Subjunctive Mood: as if , I wish, even though,if only….
Faced with the subjunctive form,I design groupwork to practise it.
Step 4. Work in groups and act out in class.
Role- playing (group work, 3 minutes to prepare and give a speech.)
This step aims at the students to practise Subjunctive Form by debating and thinking.
( Divide the class into four groups.)
Group 1: if you were Xiaohua, what would you do?
 Group 2: if you were a classmate of Xiaohua, what would you do?
Group 3: if you were a specialist or doctor in AIDS field, what would you do?
 Group 4: if you were an Government official, what would you do ?
Step 5. The Important Language Focus:
Purpose: Train the Ss’ ability of understanding and using language.

7.suffer from: feel pain, discomfort, great sorrow,etc.
8.deal with: attend to (a problem, task, etc.)
Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the words above.
      AIDS is a disease that _breaks down_the body’s immune system. HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, can be transmitted via_unprotected sex, infected_blood transfusions or at birth. There is no cure available for the disease and AIDS patients have to deal with _the fact that they mongh die young. Unfortunately, a deadly disease such as AIDS also frighten others. ALL too often, people treat AIDS patients _as if_ they were bad or dangerous.
Step 6 Summary and homework
In this class, we’ve not only learned more about AIDS, but also learnt how to act towards people who have AIDS. We should call on all the people to fight against AIDS. Besides, we’ve learned some useful words and phrases as well as some useful structures with the Subjunctive Mood used in it.
After class, please read the text more times to make sure you’ve really understood it and master the useful language points. Write a plan about how to help some patients.
