Teaching plan for Unit 2 English around the world Using language-Reading II
Teaching goals:
1. Knowledge and Ability:
a. Arouse the students’ reading skills.
b. Enable the students to learn something about standard English and dialects.
c. Improve the students’ ability of speaking and reading.

2. Process and Methods
a. Task-based method in the forms of fast reading, answering question, filling blanks and discussions.
b. Individual, pair or group work to make every student work in class.

3. Emotion and Value
a. Arouse the students’ desire in learning English and make them to join in the activities in learning.
b. Help the students to learn to study and express themselves bravely and make them love English and life.
c. Improve their abilities in inter-cultural communication. 

Teaching important points:
1. Help the students to understand the passage..
2. Enable the students to use the reading skills.
3. Enable the students to learn something about standard English and dialects.

Teaching difficult points:
1. How to ensure every student to use the reading skills.
2. How to clear away the blocks in vocabulary of the students will make the understanding more difficult.

Teaching methods:
Individual work, pair work and group work.

Teaching procedures & ways
Step1 Lead in
1. Answer the question: Do you think there are some dialects in English?
2.Look at a video about English Accents.
3. Look at the map of the world, and talk about the English dialects they know.
【设计意图】本环节先通过一个问题,引出这课的主题:英语也有方言。然后通过观看一个视频让学生对英语方言有个基本的了解。

Step 2 Fast reading
Make the students read the passage fast, and find out the topic sentences of each paragraph.
【设计意图】让学生通过找出段落中心句的方式做快速阅读,目的是让学生对文章有一个大概的了解。

Step 3 Detailed reading
1. Read paragraph 1. Answer the question:
In the writer’s opinion, is there standard English?
2. Read paragraph 2-3 and complete the chart with four questions:
(1) What is a dialect?
(2) What American English dialects are mentioned?
(3) Why does the US have so many dialects?
(4) Can Americans understand each other?
3. Make the students listen to the passage and read after it.
【设计意图】让学生分段细读文章,运用阅读技巧去完成每一部分的练习。通过做问答题和填表的方式训练学生的阅读能力。最后让学生跟读课文以加深印象。

Step 4 Language points
1. Words and phrases
Explain the important words and phrases in the passage, then ask the students to do some exercises.

2. Sentences
Explain the important sentence in the passage, then ask the students to do some exercises.
Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English.
【设计意图】通过讲解和练习课文的重点词汇和句型,让学生对课文能有更深一步的了解,并学习到一些有用的表达。

Step 5 Discussion
   Discuss this question: How many dialects are there in China?
Let the students discuss in groups, and then make some group leaders talk something about this topic.
【设计意图】中文里方言很多,通过讨论,让学生对语言中的方言有进一步的了解,也可以让学生用上一些刚学到的语言知识。

Step 6 Read & Imitating
1. Let the students read the 3 dialogues in pairs. Pay attention to the different words which have a same meaning.
2. Make the students tell the different words.
【设计意图】通过3个小对话的演绎,让学生更深切地了解英式英语和美式英语的区别。。

Step 7 Homework
1. Find more information about English and Chinese dialects.
2. Finish the exercises in the learning paper.
3. Prepare for the Listening.
【设计意图】课堂的延伸,巩固对单词的记忆和文章的理解,拓展对英语的了解。
