The instructional design of the language points of
A TRIP ON“THE TRUE NORTH”
This is the second teaching period of this unit. We first check the students’ homework and offer chances for the students to review what they learned during the warming-up and reading period.
The emphasis in this period will be placed on the important new words, expressions and sentence patterns in the text. In order to make the students understand these points thoroughly, we can first get the students to understand their meanings in the text, the give some exhalations about them, later offer some practices to make students master their usages. Some words and expressions, such as rather than, surround, measure, settle down, manage to do sth, catch the sight of---, have a gift for, and within etc are useful and important. We ought to pay more attention to them and design special exercises.
At the end of the class, we can summarize the useful expressions and sentence structures we learned to help the students do the review work, and some exercise for consolidation are also necessary. In doing this, they can learn, grasp and use these important language points well.
Teaching Key Points:
1. Enable the students to grasp the usages of such important new words and expressions as rather than, surround, settle down, have a gift for, catch sight of---
2. Introduce the appositive clause in the text to the students.

Ability aims:
1. Get the students to know the usage of the words like rather than, surround, measure, settle down, catch sight of---- and enable them to use these expressions properly.
2. Enable the students to know the main structure o f the appositive clause.
Emotional aims:
1. Stimulate the students’ interest in learning English.
2. Develop the students’ spirit of cooperation and teamwork.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 Revision
1. Check the homework exercises.
2. Ask some students to tell something about their route in Canada.
Step 2 Reading and practice
1. Divide the students into groups and get them to read the reading passage again while underlining the words and expressions which they think are important in the text, and ask them to refer to the notes on page85-87, and the explanations on the “Student Times” to know the meaning and usage of them.
2. Ask one student in each group to point out the language points that they had found and try their best to explain them to other students.
Questions about the language points are also welcomed. Encourage other students to answer the raised questions.
Step 3 checking
Add some important points to their answers, and use more example sentences and give them more relative phrases to enlarge their knowledge.
1. Rather than take the aeroplane all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train west to east across Canada.
Rather than与其---不如---,宁愿---不要----相当于instead of
He is an explorer rather than a sailor.  
You rather than I are going to go camping.
注意:rather than 连接两个名词或代词作主语时,谓语动词应与rather than 前面的名词或代词在人称和数上保持一致。
2. Some people have the idea that you can cross Canada in less than five days, but they forget the fact that Canada is5,500 kilometers from coast to coast.
that 引导的同位语从句,跟在一些名词(如fact, idea, news, promise) 的后面,用于说明和解释前面的名词。
3. People think it is Canada’s most beautiful city, surrounded by mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
surround  vt 围绕,包围
The factory is surrounded by the trees. 工厂为树木所环绕。
Surrounded by the enemy, they chose to give in. 面对敌人的围困,他们选择了屈服。

4. It is so wet there that the trees are extremely tall, some measuring over 90metres.

4. That afternoon aboard the train, the cousins settled down in their seats.
settle down (1) 舒服地坐或躺下来
He settled down in an armchair to read newspapers. 他坐在扶手椅上读书。
(2) 习惯于新的生活方式、工作等
He is settling down well in his new job. 他很能适应这份新工作。
