Teaching plan for
Module 1 Unit 2 English around the World Reading
 
Teaching goals:
1.     Knowledge and Ability:
a. To read about the history and importance of English language
b. To train the students’ abilities and skills of using the skimming and scanning.
c. To develop the students’ abilities of reading comprehending.
d. To teach students some reading strategy about how to clear the clues about the passage.
e. To teach use the sentence learned to write a passage.
 
2.     Process and Methods
a. Question-and-answer activity.
b. Task-based method in the forms of skimming, scanning and careful reading comprehension
c. Individual and group work to make every student work in class.
d. Discussion to help the students understand better what they have learned.
 
3.     Emotion and Value
a. Help the student know the importance of learning English and set an active attitudes in learning English.
b. Arouse the students’ desire in learning English and make them to join in the activities in learning.
c. Improve their abilities in inter-cultural communication. 
 
Teaching important points:
1. Help the students understand the history and importance of English language.
2. Help the students learn some reading strategy.
 
Teaching difficult points:
1. How to improve the students’ reading ability and understand the passage better.
2. How to enable the students to summarize the importance of leaning English.
3. How to use the sentence learned to write a passage.
 
Teaching methods:
1. Individual work, pair work and group work.

Teaching aids
 A computer, a projector and some pictures.
 
Teaching procedures & ways
Step Pre-reading
1.     Listen and say
Enjoy a listening material of VOA and BBC, ask the students to tell some differences between them。
2.     Competition Pictures Asking
Two groups act as American, the other two will be the Britain. Show them some pictures and competition will began between the American and Britain to see which one will tell the right words faster.
3.     New words review
Go through some new words and phrases in the reading.
 
Design purpose: This step is used as a preparation for the reading. Students in this step will get a simple impression about the development of English and then it can arouse their interests in the reading. And the new words and phrases will be helpful for the understanding
 
Step While-reading
1.  Predicting
 Skim the title “The Road to Modern English” and predict (预测) what the passage is mainly about?
2.  Skimming and scanning
Skim the first and last sentences of each paragraph and find out key sentence of each paragraph, ask them to match the main point for each paragraph.
Paragraph 1: The spread of the English language in the world
Paragraph 2: Native speaker can understand each other but they may not be able to understand everything.
Paragraph 3: All languages change when cultures communicate with one another.
Paragraph 4: English is spoken as a foreign language or second language in Africa and Asia.
3. Summary and lead in the time clue
Fill in the blanks about the main idea, and then lead in the time clues
The text is mainly talking about the_____________ of English, now more and more people speak_______. Native English speakers can ___________each other but not__________. English is changing over______.
The passage is writing in the order of time!
 
 (Design purpose: To guide the students to get some clues from the title and lead them how to guess the main idea of the passage by catching the key sentences of each paragraph. It will do good to get a clear line for reading. It’s helpful for them to form a good habit before reading.)
